Lappeenranta - Cycling City of the Year 2015

It is easy to bicycle in Lappeenranta. There are a total of 275 kilometres of bicycle paths and 95 kilometres of main bicycle routes. The bicycle route network has been consistently developed for many years. In addition to unification, pavements have been renewed, kerbs repaired, intersection road safety improved and routes signposted. Guidance, lighting and bicycle parking spaces have also been increased. The main routes have been selected so that they form a comprehensive and clear network through the city from all directions.

Cycling is widely promoted in Lappeenranta.

Cycling is emissions-free and it contributes to the city’s goal of reducing GHG emissions by 30% from the 1990 level by 2020 in accordance with the climate programme. Cycling is widely promoted in Lappeenranta. Many cycling events are organised, a brochure map of the main routes has been produced in four different languages and the page “Cycling” has been added to the city of Lappeenranta’s website, to promote cycling.

Lappeenranta received national recognition for the development of cycling in 2015, when the city was selected as the Cycling City of the Year.
