The hydroelectric power plants in Imatra and Tainiokoski

Fortum’s Imatra and Tainiokoski power plants are situated alongside the Vuoksi rapids. Connecting the lakes Saimaa and Ladoga, the Vuoksi is Finland’s largest river, by water discharge.

Construction of the Imatra plant started in 1922, and the first machinery tests were performed in 1928. The seventh and youngest turbine installation was commissioned in 1952. The present capacity of the power plant is 178 MW.

The Tainionkoski power plant is situated approximately six kilometres upstream from the Imatra power plant. Its construction was completed in 1950. The power plant is currently comprised of four turbines and produces 62 MW.
