BeyondEE – Integrated Digital Solutions for District Heating Optimisation & Empowering End-Users

The BeyondEE project is being implemented in collaboration with the City of Lappeenranta and its affiliated companies, Lappeenrannan Energia and Lappeenrannan Asuntopalvelu. The project is part of the European Union’s NetZeroCities program, which aims to pilot solutions for achieving carbon neutrality in European cities.

The topic of the BeyondEE project is integrated digital solutions for district heating optimization. The project’s goal is to optimize district heating consumption in residential and service buildings. One of the project's objectives is to increase users' convenience by preventing unnecessary heating of spaces. Additionally, the project enables the monitoring of buildings' thermal environments and indicates the need for heating equipment maintenance.

Project Objectives:

1. To achieve direct emission reductions through the installation of smart heating control systems in buildings, as well as indirect emission reductions by providing flexibility capacity to the district heating system, without compromising indoor air quality.

2. The project aims to promote the widespread adoption of demand response solutions in centralized heating systems. The goal is to create a model where the benefits generated by the savings are fairly distributed between the commercial system providers, property owners, and the energy company. The project will develop guidelines for the productization and implementation of demand response in district heating systems.

Implementation Plan:

The project is divided into two phases.

1. In the first phase, during the 2024-2025 heating period, the solution will be piloted in residential buildings owned by Lappeenrannan Asuntopalvelu.

2. In the second phase, during the 2025-2026 heating period, the solution will be piloted in commercial properties where the heating of ventilation systems accounts for the largest share of heating energy consumption.
