The City of Lappeenranta, the Saimaa University of Applied Sciences and Design Reform and have been working together on developing the virtual modelling of the city. Several selected areas in the city centre will be modelled and the future visions of 2030 and 2050 are created describing the anticipated city views.
So far, the existing data of spatial information has been collected, examined and tested, several platforms for publication have been benchmarked and the most suitable one selected to be used. In the meantime, more detailed information is needed for modelling. The city is planning to purchase a new laser scanning of the city centre this Summer to provide the necessary additional data for the modelling process.
The project workers of the City of Lappeenranta (MUA) visited the Media centre of the city, which provides services and digital development for the city organization, e.g., schools, street crossings, etc. The Minecraft computer game is very popular among kids, but it can also be used for many purposes, e.g., city modelling.
In UIR project the Design Reform and Total Design are together creating an outlook and form design of piloting products. The Design Reform is an experienced designer of virtual reality models and the Total Design is focusing on the technical design of the products. They have already designed various models of the pilot products, which will be implemented next year. The noise barrier is one of the piloting products, designing of which has already started with drafts of aesthetic forms and shapes. The location for the noise barrier has also been confirmed - it will be located behind a kinder garden and a school blocking the noise from the railway. The other urban piloting products are benches, flower pots, etc.
