Course of the game

At the start of the game, you briefly see the steps involved in setting up the 2030 Agenda goals at the UN. A game table then appears in front of you with four ‘playing cards’ related to ecological sustainability goals (life on land 15, life below water 14, climate action 13 and clean water 6). The player must choose one of the four ecological goal cards, which is then slipped into a time machine.


The time machine takes the player to the year 2030, at which time a dystopian/horror scenario related to the theme of the chosen card has come true in the world.


In the dystopian landscape, the player faces questions about how you could prevent the threat from coming true with your own choices. The player gets to choose between four different action options that they need to click on based on their effectiveness (the most important option first and the least effective option last).

There are four different sets of questions for the player to answer, and the ‘life points’ the player obtains from them are carried forward to the next level of the game.

Then, once the time machine has returned to the present moment, the player faces the next challenge, which is a maze.

There are both bad and good forces preventing or helping the player in the maze. Getting through the maze is easier the more points the player has managed to collect in the previous dystopia stage. When encountering various good characters in the maze, the player must choose the better of the two options presented to save the planet. Correct choices give the player extra time to get through the maze. The maze serves as a metaphor for real life, where people have to grapple with diverging forces, for example, when trying to stop climate change.

After getting through the maze, the player moves on to the final battle, the purpose of which is to illustrate active action to defeat the forces opposing the solution. The better the choices the player has made in the earlier stages of the game and the more points they have accumulated, the easier it is to win the battle. If the player wins the battle, they return to the start of the game to choose a new playing card. If the player loses, they will have to try to get through the same card (theme) again.

Once the player has managed to get through the whole game, they have the opportunity to make a pledge to accomplish the goals of sustainable development. Pupils can also work with teachers to make a joint pledge with their class or school.
