OVAKO IS A LEADING EUROPEAN MANUFACTURER OF ENGINEERING STEEL, WORKING WITH ITS CUSTOMERS TO CREATE SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS FOR A BETTER FUTURE.
Ovako’s Imatra mill develops and manufactures technically advanced steel for demanding applications in the automotive and mechanical engineering industries, among others. The different types of steels are used in a wide range of products, such as power transmission equipment and transformers, shafts, gears, crankshafts, springs, bearings, screws and mining equipment.
– Demanding applications require both high performance and reliable and consistent quality from materials – combining these is Ovako’s core competence, says Manager of Technical Customer Service Johanna Haapasalmi.
Ovako’s operations are strongly based on the circular economy and resource efficiency. The main raw material used is recycled scrap, which is melted down using fossil-free electricity. As a result, Ovako’s steel products have one of the lowest carbon footprints in the world. The ecobalance of the production process is also exemplary.
– The Imatra mill produces only about five kilograms of waste per tonne of steel produced that cannot be recycled. Most of the materials are recycled back into production, says Haapasalmi.
The Imatra mill produces around 250 different types of steel. Imatra’s best-known product is M-Steel®, which saves customers machining costs and improves the productivity of machining processes. Common to all Ovako steels are slag cleanliness and high strength, which are achieved by minimising impurities in the steel during the production process.
– This gives Ovako’s steels high-grade properties that help customers produce lighter, stronger and more durable end products, says Haapasalmi.
